This is a collection of historic air combat information and Aircraft Description Cards (ADCs) I designed to be used with JD Webster's Fighting Wings series of WW2-era air combat games.

Uncle Ted's has a new home, with room for everything. Many thanks to some crazy Czech gentlemen with a server who decided that Uncle Ted's should remain online. I think they wanted to be sure they could get to all of the ADCs. Whatever their reason, they have provided this space for Uncle Ted's gratis, which is extremely generous. Go visit their sites: All of Uncle Ted's ADCs are now available. Please report any bugs or broken links as I am bound to have forgotten something. |
I have always been curious about aircraft not mentioned much by history, usually because they had little effect and that they were inferior to what the enemy used. (There is little glory in discussing getting beaten; and if you win later, you talk about how you won...). As in any aircraft game, it is easy to win flying a superior aircraft; I've always had a spot in my heart for the guy fighting the uphill battle.
Aircraft technology in the mid to late 1930s underwent a series of major advances - rather like computers in the late '80s and '90s. "State of the art" in materials, manufacturing, and aerodynamics advanced rapidly. Designs that were top of the line, using the most powerful engines available were out-classed by designs built a year later.
Also, the design paradigm (that is, what made a "good" fighter) was also changed rapidly from a basis in maneuverability to a basis in speed as both fighters and bombers changed rapidly. The more powerful engines available allowed for single-engine pursuit ships to be able to catch multi-engine bombers; they also allowed heavier aircraft that could carry more and larger weapons.
However, in beginning of Word War II, brave men flew what was available to them in an attempt to defend their nations. Accordingly, I have put my attention on to some rarer aircraft not often mentioned by history... (see the ADC collection).
Of course, these aircraft did not operate in a vacuum. Some of these aircraft served with minor nations, who may have had a completely or partially indigenous air force, or may have built it from purchases from other major powers. See the Minor Nation Air Forces.
These aircraft were not built solely for their deterrence value or for pretty displays at airshows. from 1936 to 1945 (and points beyond), the aircraft discussed here were involved in air warfare campaigns, which, as a technology or a military science, was developing at as furious a rate as the aircraft themselves. See Alternate Air Campaigns.
